Basically you have to understand that when you surrender it means GOD is everything for you, everything else you trust will be taken care of by God. You have to give back everything to God, because He is the one who gave it to us, but like a thief we claimed it as our own and then got entangled in maya's web in our mind. Because the Guru is kind, he only requests us to give back 10% - 2.5hrs simran & 10% of wealth and he puts in the other 90%. This sounds like a business transaction but really it is only to get us started in changing our wrong mindset that has got us into all the depression in the first place. In your heart everyday you have to keep saying "I am nothing, nothing is mine", (ma hau nahee, ma kujh nahee) - you have to become a giver, giver, giver instead of thinking all the time, my family, my health, my money, my reputation. All these things we have made higher priority than God in our life, that is why we are drowning in the mess. In your heart needs to come thankfulness that even though we are unworthy, full of sins, done no good deeds, still the Guru has been kind to give us the priceless diamond of Naam. Even if we gave everything for the rest of our life it still wouldn't be enough to thank for this priceless diamond (naam amolak heera). Everyday you have to have such love for God in the heart of the Guru who gave you Naam, that you say "Everything is yours, nothing is mine. May my family die, may my body rot, but may I never forget your Naam" It doesnt mean your family and body will rot, but it frees you from the attachments (MOH thief) to your family and reputation that is the root cause of your depression. Giving Daswand (tenth) frees you from the the tight grip of the greed thief around your heart. Giving to your mother is good, but its still limited to "my family", you need to expand that goodness to see all as one, one in all. When you have Guru you have to surrender to them first before family or friends or anything else. Even if you only give only $1 , you give first to your Guru, your give to others, then you give to family etc. Otherwise you will never break your sense of "my family" - MOH.
God bless you to understand what surrender truly means and to now earn it,

obeying them one realises God. -- Guru amar Das ji.
Earning Gurbani is the hard part, because its easy to say, but hard to do because it pinches us inside. Recognise when that pinching/confusion happens inside yourself, that is ego not wanting to let go. The amount of time we take to do what gurbani is saying is how thick our ego is. Our whole battle is to say to ego when it pricks us "I listened to you my whole life and where did it get me? Depression. I am NOT listening to you again." and then keep doing the opposite.
God bless You.
