SatNaam Ji

Dandauth Bandhna ji,

Conversation with Dassan Dass ji yesterday.

FALLING TEN STEPS BACKWARDS

Dassan Dass: Satnaam jee.

Harjit: Satnaam ji, Dandauth Bandhna ji.

Dassan Dass: God bless you dandaut to you all.

Harjit: God Bless You and everyone ji.

Dassan Dass: thanks for your kindness, we are very fortunate to have people like you in this life, thanks thanks thanks to the Almighty.

Harjit: we are not kind ji, just stubborn, foolish, egotistic, thick-headed, always going back into the filth, making excuses - our auguns (mistakes) have no end,

but still you keep picking us up everytime we fall, so thankyou ji for all of your kindness.

"kirpa karo deen kay date, meray gun avgun na bicharo koi.

Matee ka kia dhopay swamee. Manas kee gat ehee." ...

Shower your Grace O Giver to the Meek and do not consider my merits and mistakes.

How can the dirt be washed? This is the state of mankind." (http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=3289)

We felt we went back ten steps over the last 2 weeks, but have crawled back up (almost) now with your blessings.

Dassan Dass: you are full of divine qualities and divinity as well, you are doing great, just keep it up.  You have all the divine powers, just recognize them use them to the greatest extent you can.

Harjit: We  got entangled in stress and frustrations, then somehow ended up trying to get out of the maya web and going backwards.

Dassan Dass: these kinds of corrections happen, so take everything positively.

Harjit: yes ji, we recognise all the thoughts as maya and we have passed them before and have to pass thru them again as quick as possible, it gets easier second time around!

Dassan Dass: this is all a part of bandgi, but bandgi itself is an infinite divine power so it cleans up and makes everyting happen by itself.

PRICELESS DIAMOND

Dassan Dass: Tanraj Ji is doing good. He is a wonderful addition and will stay serving and delivering Puran Sat.  Tanraj Ji is Dhan Dhan.  We all bow to him for his Bandgi and dedication to Puran Sat.  He is just trying to help us all.  We should respect him.  He is a highly elevated spiritual soul destined to serve and deliver the Truth to the masses.  We are a sacrifice to his devotion trust and love.  He is Anmol (priceless) diamond - full of bandgi - the Infinite Divine Power.  We are all blessed with this Infinite Divine Power of doing Bandgi, therefore, we all should make use of this Infinite Divine Power, this does wonders to us when we use this Infinite Divine Power - power of naam simran, power of being humble, being forgiving and so on.

[Note : we have uploaded Tanraj Ji's lifestory and experiences here

DIFFICULTY WITH AMRITVELA

Harjit: we need your help ji to get through amritvela in peace, with consistency.  We were with your blesings waking up and doing our simran.  But then got shaken for the last weeks or so by all this.  However, we find it difficult doing simran as we find sleepiness comes in, or our neck aches , or we feel like we are not getting anywhere.  Before we would get frustrated, now we just try to accept that this is the long and lonely path we have to walk, where only SatNaam is with us, wether we feel something or not.  Is this correct understanding - that its like struggling thru a dark tunnel before getting to the light?  Also we remember you saynig when we do simran, then our dhoots, ego in my case, is getting rattled.  We only have this problem in the early hrs 1-2 am, if we get up at 5 we feel good, we enjoy everything.  But we pray you hold our hand and we get thru all day and night and drive ego out and naam in.

Dassan Dass: do whatever you can do, just keep on praying.  We are hold ing your hand we are always with you.

Harjit: thankyou ji, your words mean alot to us, they are Gods words.

PROGRESS ON PUNJABI VERSION OF SUKHMANI EXPLANATION

Harjit: Also we were thinking to perhaps put another verion of sukhmani on the website, where all the words are just in english, to make it easier for non-punjabis?  Eg where it says "Param Jyot Puran Parkash" we would replace with "Supreme Light COmplete Brightness" (i.e. the meanings in the glossary).  Would you think this is useful to do?

Dassan Dass: that is not necessary, people need to understand these words as they are.  Their divine power is felt in the original form of these words.  The punjabi version will be a lot more powerful.

Harjit: you were saying that alot more gyan was coming as you were reviewing the Punjabi version.

Dassan Dass: punjabi readers need a lot more stronger explanations then english readers

Harjit: ok, i see, it is different because it is aimed at different people. That makes sense.

Dassan Dass: but punjabi edition when it comes out will do wonders to punjabi readers all over and in particular in punjab. But it will take time to edit the entire version.  It is very time consuming, but now we have learnt typing in punjabi.

Harjit: yes ji, it is very time consuming, we deeply appreciate your seva as well, because there are hardly any books written by a Sant himself, so these books are valuable because they have come through yourself.  Same with baba ji's website ( www.eternalguru.info) , we always wanted Baba jis words as exact as possible on the website, rather than what he said to me and what I  then typed up from memory, so that is why we try and record Baba ji talking to us.  And with guru ji's kirpa that is what has mostly happened.

Dassan Dass: This is all Gurparsaad and Baba ji's Gurkirpa.

SANGAT OF SWANS

Dassan Dass: Swaraj Jee has also become a suhagan (bride of God).  She had darshans (visions) of Mohammed Sahib Ji when she was told by Mohammed Sahib Jee to do Satnaam Simran. [In her past life/lives she was a Muslim and prayed for Darshan of Mohammed Sahib ji, but it only happened in this life, and Mohammed Sahib ji told her what to do as per the path she is on now.]

Harjit: you are so kind, your prayers are so kind, we read in your reply to Teresa that Swaraj has also been cured of her cancer now since taking your charan sharan (sheklter of your feet).

Dassan Dass: Teresa Jee is also dhan dhan, she has her dassam duaar open already, she is a divinely blessed soul.  We are all very fortunate to be blessed with her presence.

Harjit: we are so lucky to have company of so many swans ji, we are just a crow, but in your kindness you show us all these swans.

Dassan Dass: you are a swan too, and not a crow, your seva is dhan dhan.

Harjit: we never feel we are a swan, we see how great all the sangat is, and we only see all of our mistakes. Thankyou for saying so and giving us your blessings.

Dassan Dass: get blessings from sangat by doing dandaut to them, wash their feet and clean their shoes, you will feel great and become great

Harjit: thankyou ji, we will do so, we had inner hukam to wash feet of sangat about a year ago, and it still comes inside us to do so, so thankyou for saying.

Dassan Dass: wash sangats feet and see what happens to you and the sangat as well this coming Friday.

Harjit: thankyou we will do so, thankyou so much for saying so.

Dassan Dass: each one of you should do that to elevate yourself and be relieved of the ego. This is again a wonderful infinite divine power that you can and others can use too to cleanse themselves up from inside

Harjit: yes, we last did it about 4 years ago!! And the new sangat has never experienced it.

"charan sadh kee dhoi dhoi peeo, arap sadh ko apanaa jeeo.

- Wash the feet of the Holy, and drink in this water.
Dedicate your soul to the Holy." - Sukhmani (

Dassan Dass: we have to go now, will speak to you later, god bless you

Harjit: thankyou for thinking of us, dandauth bandhna ji.

Please forgive all our mistakes, having reading astpadi 13 - about saint slander, we understand our filth (ego, anger, desires , feeling of failure, of not always being able to complete worldy tasks) that comes up is due to our own past slandering of sants, so please keep forgiving us for all our sins known and unknown ji.

Dealing With Jealousy

SatNaam

Dandauth Bandhana

This last week I have noticed that on seeing very successful people I find my self feeling like a failure.  Wether they have been successful in business or in spirituality, hearing their stories only makes me feel low.  Years ago, when I was young and bright-eyed, those same stories inspired me to also achieve the same.   So why not now?  When I look within it is because for whatever reason, no matter how hard I tried at times, I was unable to get achieve that same success. (Actually to be more accurate I did achieve success at times, but right now I dont feel successful.)   So now when I hear those success stories it only makes me feel disappointed in myself and if I wasnt more self-aware I could easily become jealous.  But that is not a good feeling, so go within  and find that the root cause is my own feeling of failure.  So rather than getting jealous or feeling bad, I go to Gurbani. And Guru Ram Das ji gives me hope, where there is no hope left.  Gurbani gives me the words to say and how to pray, to turn negative feelings into something positive.

"O God, You are the Hope of all. All beings are Yours; You are the Wealth of all.
O God, none return from You empty-handed; at Your Door, the Gurmukhs are praised and acclaimed.
In the terrifying world-ocean of poison, people are drowning-please lift them up and save them!
This is servant Nanak's humble prayer. ||4||1||65||"

Here is the complete Shabad, it is very beautiful and from the heart.  And in the same way Guru Ram Dass Ji offered his prayer to His Satguru Amar Das Ji, we too
can offer it to our SatGuru ji (whoever that is for each of us - Baba ji, Dassan Dass Ji, Jesus, Mohammed, Guru Nanak and so on).

Siree Raag, Fourth Mehla, First House:

Within my mind and body is the intense pain of separation; how can my Beloved come to meet me in my home?
When I see my God, seeing God Himself, my pain is taken away.
I go and ask my friends, ""How can I meet and merge with God?""||1||
O my True Guru, without You I have no other at all.
I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary. Please be Merciful and unite me with the Lord. ||1||Pause||
The True Guru is the Giver of the Name of the Lord. God Himself causes us to meet Him.
The True Guru understands the Lord God. There is no other as Great as the Guru.
I have come and collapsed in the Guru's Sanctuary. In His Kindness, He has united me with God. ||2||
No one has found Him by stubborn-mindedness. All have grown weary of the effort.
Thousands of clever mental tricks have been tried, but still, the raw and undisciplined mind does not absorb the Color of the Lord's Love.
By falsehood and deception, none have found Him. Whatever you plant, you shall eat. ||3||
O God, You are the Hope of all.

relieve your neck pain

SatNaam ji

most of us have probably suffered with a stiff neck and tight shoulders as most of us nowadays
spend alot of time sitting infront of a computer/TV/driving and even sitting for long hours of simran
or doing kirtan can cause lots of tension in the neck and shoulders. [Personally I have had a stiff neck for the last month and know
the biggest thing I need to do is to rest, eg lie down whilst doing simran instead of sitting up.  Also to take more breaks from my desk.].

Here are some useful exercises, which you can also recite SatNaam with.  Just say "Sat" in your mind as you breathe in.
Say "naam" as you breathe out.

Relieve Your Neck Pain with Yoga

By Michael Russell

Everyone gets a little stiff neck once in a while, and yoga can wipe away the pain with a few concentrated exercises. First, though, you must be certain the pain isn't related to something more serious than a simple stiff neck. Instead of yoga, see a doctor if any one of the following is true:

- You neck pain has persisted for more than three days, or it keeps coming back.

- Your neck pain is accompanied by dizziness or nausea.

- The pain seems to radiate down into your arms or legs.

- The pain began with a fall or accident.

If your stiff neck does NOT meet any of the above conditions, these simple yoga exercises can help increase your neck's flexibility and strengthen the neck muscles. By exercising you speed blood and needed nutrients to the area, easing the neck pain gradually. Try these:

Neck Stretches

Sitting cross-legged, tall and straight, and inhale eyes forward. Exhale, moving chin to chest. Repeat this breath five times, the fifth time holding chin to chest breathing three times through the nose. Inhale, raising the head to center again. This time drop your right ear to your right shoulder during the exhale. Repeat this breath five times, the fifth time holding ear to shoulder for three breaths. Repeat this sequence with the left ear to left shoulder.

Half-Circle Rolls

Drop your chin to your chest. Slowly roll it up to your right shoulder, down to center, up to the left shoulder and down to center. Repeat this three to five times. Never roll the head in a full circle, as this can cause damage.

Shoulder Hunches

Hunch your shoulders up as high as you can, then relax them completely. Repeat five to six times. Next roll your shoulders in forward circles five to six times, then backward circles five to six times. Notice how relaxed your shoulders feel. Try this quick relaxation exercise any time you feel tension building.

Chest Expander

Stand with your feet together and your fingers interlaced behind your back. Inhale while raising your hands behind your back, squeezing your shoulder blades together and tucking your tailbone under to keep from over-arching your back. Hold this position for three to four breaths, then lower your arms slowly during the next exhale.

Arm Lifts

Hold your arms straight out in front of you, parallel to the ground with palms facing each other but not touching. Inhale while bringing them up next to your head. Exhale while you bring them down again. Repeat this four to eight times.

Press It

Place either palm on the back of your head. Simultaneously press the head and hand against each other for a count of ten. Move the palm to the forehead and repeat the pressing for another count of ten. Now place the right palm against the right side of your head and press head and hand together for a count of ten. Repeat with the left palm and left side of the head.

These yoga exercises are designed to relieve physical stress and related pain. The best pain relief is pain prevention, so be sure to watch your posture and set your workspace to avoid slouching.

mindful eating

SatNaam Ji

this is a very good way to remember SatNaam KartaPurakh whilst eating.  You will find God in your food, rather than just gulping it down and talking to others/watching TV/reading the paper.   You can make eating into a divine deed!

Mindful Eating

By Liz Franklin

When was the last time you really enjoyed eating a meal? With mindful eating, you make the meal the total focus of your attention. Turn off the TV, put down your magazine or newspaper and take a moment to enjoy your food.

Start by looking at the meal. See how the colors and shapes and textures complement each other. Then smell your food. Close your eyes, and inhale the varied scents. See how they mingle and combine to form a new and unique scent.

Take your first bite. While you are chewing, feel the texture of the food in your mouth. Savor the flavor as it explodes across your tongue or as it gently slides into your mouth.

Look at your plate again and see how removing that bite has shifted the balance among the food on your plate.

Make each bite count and take your time to enjoy the varied flavors, scents and textures as you add them to your body.

Avoid drinking very much with your meal. It is especially important to avoid large amounts of very cold liquids. These will douse your digestive fires and let the food linger longer in your body. Sip small amounts of room temperature water or red wine with your meal. Don't wash down your food with big gulps of ice water or other cold liquids. A cup of warm tea is a lovely way to end your meal.

Let's step back a moment to the time before you sat down to this meal. Before you eat you want to be sure that you really are hungry and not eating just because it is "time to eat". Where is your breath? If it is in your right nostril your digestive fires are lit. If it is in your left nostril, the digestive fires are banked and you might be eating simply because it is time to eat. See if the right nostril will open before you sit down to your meal. Listen to your body and eat when you are hungry rather than eating at "mealtimes". You will tend to eat less and enjoy your food more if you eat each time you are hungry.

Check in with your stomach. Is it really hungry or are you eating to fill another empty place inside. Are you upset, angry, frustrated, lonely or bored? Any of these emotions can trigger a "need" for food that has nothing to do to with needing nourishment. Try to approach mealtime with a quiet mind and open heart.

If you are busy with another task while you eat, you will probably eat more than you need as you might fail to notice the subtle signs you body sends you when it is becoming full. Try to focus your full attention on your meal and read your magazine or newspaper after you have finished eating. You do not need to empty your plate if you are full before you have finished all the food set before you.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a small "treat" now and again. Savor that piece of chocolate rather than devouring 4 or 5 pieces. Let the chocolate slowly melt in you mouth. Feel the smooth texture on your tongue.

Make each morsel of food a celebration and you will find that you leave the table satisfied and full, in more ways than one!

The Master

The Master

When one Guru  was dying, one of his deciple asked him "Guruji, who was your master?"He said, "I had thousands of masters. If I just relate their names it will take months, years and it is too late. But three masters I will certainly tell you about.

One was a thief. Once I got lost in the desert, and when I reached a village it was very late, everything was closed. But at last I found one man who was trying to make a hole in t he wall of a house. I asked him where I could stay and he said 'At this time of night it will be difficult, but you can say with me - if you can stay with a thief'.And the man was so beautiful. I stayed for one month! And each night he would say to me, 'Now I am going to my work. You rest, you pray.' When he came back I would ask 'Could you get anything?' He would say, 'Not tonight. But tomorrow I will try again, God willing.' He was never in a state of hopelessness, he was always happy.

When I was meditating and meditating for years on end and nothing was happening, many times the moment came when I was so desperate, so hopeless, that I thought to stop all this nonsense. And suddenly I would remember the thief who would say every night, 'God willing, tomorrow it is going to happen.'

And my second master was a dog. I was going to the river, thirsty and a dog came. He was also thirsty. He looked into the river, he saw another dog there -- his own image -- and became afraid. He would bark and run away, but his thirst was so much that he would come back. Finally, despite his fear, he just jumped into the water, and the image disappeared. And I knew that a message had come to me from God: one has to jump in  inspite of all fears.

And the third master was a small child. I entered a town and a child was carrying a lit candle. He was going to the mosque to put the candle there.

Just joking I asked the boy, 'Have you lit the candle yourself?' He said, '
Yes sir.' And I asked, 'There was a moment when the candle was unlit, then there was a moment when the candle was lit. Can you show me the source from which the light came?' And the boy laughed, blew out the candle, and said, 'Now you have seen the light going. Where has it gone? You tell me!'

My ego was shattered, my whole knowledge was shattered. And that moment I felt my own stupidity. Since then I dropped all my knowledgeability.

It is true that I had no master. That does not mean that I was not a disciple

-- I accepted the whole existence as my master. My Disciplehood was a greater involvement than yours is. I trusted the clouds, the trees. I trusted existence as such. I had no master because I had millions of masters I learned from every possible source. To be a disciple is a must on the path. What does it mean to be a disciple? It means to be able to learn. To be available to learn to be vulnerable to existence. With a master you start learning to learn.

The master is a swimming pool where you can learn how to swim. Once you have learned, all the oceans are yours."

Re: boring job

SatNaam,

just to add as well, that Dassan Dass ji has said to us that there is nothing wrong with striving to better yourself.  Infact that is a good thing to do as well.  So study, learn new skills, improve yourself.  New opportunities that come your way are blessings, and are how you are going to to reap the rewards of what you have sown.

The thing to understand is to surrender, to give up ego and desire, to do everything you do with an attitude of love and service.  To live under the Grace of God, to go with flow is to live by the Hukam - God's will.  To fight with your situation, to hate your current situation, to get frustrated and bored and fed up, are all signs of not accepting the Hukam, not going with the flow, not being at peace with yourself in the current situation.  The real battle is with the mind, not with the situation/job you are in.

God-Guru bless you.

Hi Harjit,
Thank you for such a long insightful answer. From what I've read the psychic stuff is not a way to measure spiritual progress, it's attained and improved my using it.

I don't believe that rats who get to run on a wheel in a cage are spiritually impaired for wanting something better. If you get a bag of product in bulk and are asked to separate, bag and
price it into smaller groups and this was all you did wouldn't you want more?

Nirvana is samsara. If I'm here permanently in different ways I should be able to find some way of supporting myself with work that's fulfilling (and I know there's ultimately neither here nor there but emptiness is also a concept and so there is a here and there after all). I'm not asking for a mansion, cadillac and a big boat. IMO. Spiritual progress isn't about denying the world nor is it about thinking that things are real.

Geez I'm bored.

SatNaam Jerica,

Guru Nanak Dev ji sat serving people grain when he worked in the storehouse.  Pretty boring wasn't it?

But when the time came Guru Nanak Dev ji got up and walked in all four directions to reach out to souls.  Pretty exciting - travel the world,

meeting great yogis, saints, sinners, create a community and so on.

From your perspective, would you think that Guru Nanak was sitting serving the grain thinking "this is really boring God,

I've got much more to do with my life than this?"  And then do you think, he made a plan to do something more fulfilling with his life -

to spread the word?

That is the way we in the world think - from perspective of what makes "me" happy, what "I" want, what "I" dont want.

I=ego =haumai

want=desire =trishna,

Guru Nanak Dev ji writes, get out of both of them

So we can see that Guru Nanak Dev ji was doing that seeimingly pretty boring job (to us) of selling grain without ego and wants i.e. without complaints and without false dreams of making a better future for himself.  so what was he doing to contain the restlesess and wandering mind, he was in love with the Truth - SatNaam.  With every pouring of grain, with every moment he was absorbed in SatNaam. so much so, that once he was counting out portions, and when he got to the thirteenth portion, which is TERA in punjabi, he went into a rapture - TERA TERA TERA TERA - which also means YOURS YOURS YOURS in punjabi.    Then his co-workers complained that Nanak was giving grain away without charging (He was so in love with SatNaam, he no longer bothered about charging and became 100% giver), ,but when the boss checked the accounts were correct.

And then what made Guru Nanak get up and spread the word in all 4 directions for the next 40 years?  Not his own want, not his own dissatisfaction, not his own plan to make a better life.  But God's Want, which is called HUKAM, which is when SatNaam works through you to help others with the blessings of God;s Name and Humbleness.

Guru Nanak Dev ji promoted the most boring of tasks combined with doing your SatNaam SatNaam rememberance (simran) into a pathway for spiritual union.  So if you see Gurdwaras, they are full of people cooking, cleaning, preparing food, wiping, washing, serving, hoovering - all the mundane tasks that most people hate doing, but when you surrender and do it for the love of your Guru, with Satnaam on your lips and service on your fingertips, then it all becomes divine - peace of mind, love, light and contentment in Truth.

When you pray to God and say, "However you keep me is what I am happy with, please just keep me in your service doing simran,"  then you will find the peace of mind you are looking for.   Then your ego and desires will cool down, then nothing is boring, nothing is unfullfilling.  In surrendering your ego and wants you find the Truth, in chasing your desires to fulfill your ego, you well get short term satisfaction if you get what you want, or you will get more frustrations and hatred in your workplace if you cant get out.

Its not about what job we are doing in life, its about seeing God in that time and place - tell me is there any place or job that God is not in?

Its just an illusion that we think we will find God doing something else.  When you say to God, "If you keep me in this job for the next 10 years or next 100 lifetimes, that is fine with me - just keep me in your service, keep me in your simran."  Then you surrender.  And what will happen?  You have leanred your lesson, your consciousness has gone up to the next level.  And things will happen to move you onto your next chapter in life - as per your karma and as per the blessings received.

We hope this makes sense.  Its not about what you are doing, it about your attitude and your love, trust and complete surrender that Satnaam SatGuru is doing what iss best for you.

waking up

SatNaam Ji
Dandauth Bandhna ji

if we really believed God was true, existed, the Truth-  SatNaam,  would we be living as we are  - with less than complete surrender?

Saw a programme about the universe yesterday, he said that our one sun is just one of about 200 billion in our galaxy - the Milky Way.
And the Milky Way is just one galaxy our of about 100 billion and beyond.

So how tiny and insignificant are we - not even a grain of sand in the Universe, yet we think we are the most important, that are life is so
important, that are goals and achieving our dreams and our happiness is most important.

Also in sangat on Friday, Namjeevan said she was blessed to go into samadhi last week, every night for long hours, and she saw EVERY
SINGLE PAST LIFE she has been born, lived and died in, along with the interactions with other souls that form our karma.  She said it
made her realise how this life of thinking her current family and kids and eistance was most important was an illusion as well.  She said
that it made her realise why Dassan Dass ji is always stressing to us , get up, do our simran, get up ealry , do long hours.  Because
if we really had seen how very long the jounrey has been to get here right now, then we wouldnt be wasting a single second to get out of the cycle of life and death
and endless reincarnations.

So make the most of this life, these are magic moments we hav ebeen given to fall in love with Satnaam and cherish the lotis feet of the Saints in our heart.

Hi Harjit,
Thank you for such a long insightful answer.

I=ego =haumai

want=desire =trishna,

Does God visit Earth and walk among the people as a man today?

QN:
Does God visit Earth and walk among the people as a man today?

REPLY:

The closest the Creator comes into the Creation is as an enlightened soul. The name God chose for Himself was "Truth - SatNaam". The person who becomes a Truth-conscious fully enlightened soul is God on Earth. Not their body, but their enlightened soul. That person is known as the SatGuru- Truth-Guru. The speak the Truth, live the Truth and deliver the Truth to the Truth-seekers. The Grace of God comes through them to ignite the Truth-seekers, so that they may also become Truth-concious enlightened souls.

These are the universal Truths delivered by Guru Nanak and the Saints and Gurus from India.

Ego vs Hukam

SatNaam Ji,
Dandauth Bandhna ji

feeling good today with your blessings, thanks for asking.  Feeling more connected everyday with "SatNaam KartaPurakh" - thatis what Dassan Dass ji asked us to do simran upon to delete our ego, for us to completely realise that SatNaam is the Creator and Doer of Everything - not me.   Not me, means this physical body and mind.  When we think, and most people do think that "I am doing something" , they mean their physical body and mind is doing it.  That there is no other power behind what they are doing.  That is what is called the ego.  Ego thinks that this physical body and mind are the source of everything - "I did it / I didn't do it".  And then ego expands by having pride of the name given to this body, having pride of beloging to a religion/caste/nation/class/tribe.  And all attachments to people , wealth and properties are actually only attachments to this physical body via the mind i.e. mind gets us attached.

That is why Dhan Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji says "hau vich aayaa hau vich gaaya, hau vich janmay hau vicha maaray ...

Salok, First Mehla:
In ego they come, and in ego they go.
In ego they are born, and in ego they die.
In ego they give, and in ego they take.
In ego they earn, and in ego they lose.
In ego they become truthful or false.
In ego they reflect on virtue and sin.
In ego they go to heaven or hell.
In ego they laugh, and in ego they weep.
In ego they become dirty, and in ego they are washed clean.
In ego they lose social status and class.
In ego they are ignorant, and in ego they are wise.
They do not know the value of salvation and liberation.
In ego they love Maya, and in ego they are kept in darkness by it.
Living in ego, mortal beings are created.
When one understands ego, then the Lord's gate is known.
Without spiritual wisdom, they babble and argue.
O Nanak, by the Lord's Command, destiny is recorded.
As the Lord sees us, so are we seen. ||1||

Ego is called false (mithya, koor)) in Gurbani.  It means living thinking that "I am something, I am someone" is false.  And all deeds that "I think I am doing"  are being recorded - every second of our existance has to be accounted for, but in ego we do not accept this either - think there is no consequences for what "I did."   What causes the ego, "me" to do deeds?  My desires.  If you had no desire, you wouldnt get up to eat, or to meet someone, or to try and achieve something.  Desires are like the carrot on the stick, and we like a donkey are trying to fulfill our desires with the hope of happiness and heaven at the end of it.  But desires may give us short term happiness, but in the long run, they lead to unhappiness and hell. Eg We eat chocolate and crisps and coke, short term pleasure of the tongue = heaven.  But long term bad health = hell.  We pray for a son and get one = happiness, but he grows up and gives us hell.  We want to become a millionaire businessman (=heaven), but end up broke in a manual job = hell.   In the process of trying to achieve our desires we may do so many bad deeds, cheating, lying, stealing, fraud, corruption, bribery and so on.  Thinking only the result matters, not how we got there.  Or we may not get anything that we desired and end up depressed, angry, rfustrated, perhaps even committing suicide.

That is the result of living in ego and desire...haumai and trishna as Baba Nanak ji calls it, haumai and trishna only make us into a slave of Maya.

So to wake us up, to make us see the bigger picture, Guru Nanak Dev ji gives us the spiritual wisdom, the Brahm Gyan.  And tells us that living under ego and desires we are mistaken.  We are living in the illusion that "I am doing something."  Because we have completely ignored the soul part of us, our spirit, our lifeforce, God within us.  What can this body and mind do if there was no soul to keep us breathing, to beat our heart, to run our digestive systems, to heal our injuries and so on?  So Guru Nanak Dev ji tells our ego that actually it has no power, no power at all.  That is explanation of our existance is false, our existance is due to the Higher Power, not to the power of our mind and body.

No power to speak, no power to keep silent.
No power to beg, no power to give.
No power to live, no power to die.
No power to rule, with wealth and occult mental powers.
No power to gain intuitive understanding, spiritual wisdom and meditation.
No power to find the way to escape from the world.
He alone has the Power in His Hands. He watches over all.
O Nanak, no one is high or low. ||33||

Guru Nanak Dev ji then continues to break the illusion that our ego is capable of doing anything and achieving things. Saying that we only receive what we have sown.  That our deeds (karni) do matter because there are consequences (karma).  So no matter how much we are praying to be a millionaire, if we haven't given in charity in the past lives, no millions are coming to us in this life. Baba ji says the ones who are starving in the third world didnt do any charitable deeds in past lives, so nothing is coming back to them in this life.     So there is no point in ego trying to make things happen that are not going to happen.  And conversely if things do happen , its because we are reaping our karma, and not because of ego - that "I did it".

Then Guru Nanak Dev ji says, just get out of desires.  Chasing desires is pointless, it only gets you entagled in the web of maya. Desires are all just a sweet poison - they tempt us with heaven but result in hell.  So get out of ego saying "I WANT THIS , I WANT THAT."   And start accepting what GOD WANTS for us, GOD'S WANT = HUKAM = GOD'S WILL.

So what does that mean, to accept this body and mind do not have any power, to stop chasing desires, because we only get what is destined for us according to our KARMA.   When our mind comes our of ego and desires and starts accepting there is a Higher Power running everything, then everything starts changing for us.  We become in tune with nature and our body which is part and parcel of nature.  Our mind goes into peace.  We realise the Divine Light within, the soul - the God-part.  We realise this is the real Infinite Divine Power and the more we fall in love with it, the more there is to love - it has no end.  We realise that this Infinite Divine Power is the Truth and the Creator and Doer of everything - SatNaam KartaPurakh.    We become an instrument of the Infinte Divine Power in the world, now we are living in the will of God, doing what God Wants i.e. living in the Hukam.

So God has created everything as per His Hukam, and we are also part of His Hukam.   But because of our ego we think "I AM A PHYSICAL BODY, I A DOING IT - JUST ME , MYSELF AND I."  So ego is a curtain of falsehood that has to be torn down in order to realise the Truth.  That is why the very first question in Gurbani is
"kiv sachyara hoia, kiv kuray tutay paal
-.how does one become truthful?  How is the curtain of falsehood torn down?"

And the asnwer is in the next line, "hukam rajaa chalnee, nanak likhiaa naal ...live according to the Hukam, live in His pleasure."

Ultimately, the Sants tell us that they become one with the Hukam i.e. with the Infinite Divine Power, with the Universal Life Force.
There is no more "ME and YOU GOD", it all becomes "TU TERA, TU TERA - YOU YOURS, YOU YOURS."

They are fully realised beings who no longer live in the illusion that Ego is doing anything, but are one with God doing everything.  Amd ultimatey there is no karma to repay, its all wiped clean, they go back to God with a clean slate, a pure divine soul.

feeling low and insecure, tired and no energy

SatNaam Dandauth Bandhan To Sangat.

just sharing a reply we sent:

==========

Why do we need gian?  Because without it we cant make sense of anything at all, why were we born, why were we
tormented, why we were so dumb as to do bad deeds, why we cant get rid of negative feelings, why we struggle,
why we are tired all the time.

Gian is a gift of God to Himself.  Gian is the highest spiritual experience.  Guru Arjun Dev ji says that the shabad i.e. the word,
the Gian, supports the mind like a column supports the roof.  So without Gian/shabad/SatNaam/Gurbani our mind is like a collapsed house.   We scramble around trying to make sense of things through our own experiences and education, but even that leads to dead ends.  So that is why Guru Nanak Dev ji says that without a Guru there is no Gian - the Brahm Gian comes through the Brahm Giani into the world.  The BrahmGiani is another word for Guru, or Sant, or Bhagat or Khalsa etc. They spend every second absorbed in Brahm - BrahmGiani ka Brahm Dhian.  And what do the deliver to the world - Brahmgiani ka bhojan gian - the Brahm giani's food is Gian.

So Dassan Dass ji has delivered Brahm Gian on the website, for him it is eanred from the highest union with Brahm.  For us though it is just knowledge.  It helps us to make sense of our mind, but it only supports our mind when we put it into practise.  Then it becomes the columns that support our mind.   That is your challenge, to go from being an unsupported mind, to a strong mind with the support fo Brahm Gian - Gur Mat  and give up our own fake columns of own wisdom - man mat.

We understand much better now that w are 40, than when we were 18 and entered onto a spiritual path - amritdhari.   We had great struggles and knew nothing, but God-Guru has helped this far, we even entered the divine Light by His Grace when we got the correct Gian from a sant.  We messed up though by going back into maya, and then 8 yrs ago Dassan Dass ji started emailing us and all that Gian is on the website satnaam.info .   Getting up at 1 am is the hardest thing to do , we have built up to it only in the last year, and have fallen back many times since then as well.  but its by God's grace only.   Along the way we have had to learn to deal with family entaglements, slander from sikh community, problems in marriage, kids illnesses, hating my job, almost becoming broke, becoming addicted to bad lust habits, becoming hateful and resentful,  you mention it, we seem to have made all the  mistakes, but we have leanred from them, got up, found a solution, moved on and somehow have got cleaned up - only by God Gurus grace.

So that is the path - we all are lost and confused to start with,  we all face pressured of society and what others think, face bullying and teasing and 101 other problems.  some face them worse than others, some deal withthem better than others.  We all have different and unique karma that has brought us into this life, so we all have to go through our unique and different journey.  No point compalinging or getting upset about what has happened in our life, if we believe in karma, then we only reaped what WE SOWED - we made it happen for ourself.  But what saves us is His Kindness, His kirpa. So that is why this journey of life is not to be seen as a struggle and bad, its actually the struggle that is transforming you within - but only if you hold on to the Brahm Gian.  Then you defeat each and every negative, destructive thought that is rooted in 5 thieves and desires, due to our past karma.

You have to struggle, just like i do , just like everyone else does.  That is what it means to conquor the mind.  And you feel tired and weak and low.   So pray for strength, "satguru ji, you are the strength of the weak, you are my support, you are my rock."  And then keep singing shabad, then go into doing simran.

That's how it is, takes time to build the inner palace, one brick at a time, one moment at a time, one utternace of Gods name at a time, one battle with one negative thought at a time.  There are no shortcuts, no one is going to press a magic button to take away all your struggles, because God is the teacher who teaches us to be perfect, so His system is perfect and the process we go through is perfect and takes as long as it takes for us to learn the lesson.

Its His gift to Himself when He wakes himself up inside us at 1 am and remembers Himself for 2.5 hrs.  WE CAN NEVER DO IT.  But we can pray, we can keep doing benti to Satguru ji to not forget about us, to bless us continuously with gurparsaad fo naam, seva and bandagi.   That is why Dassan Dass ji says keep doing the prayer "i am full of five thieves and desires, please forgive me."   By doing so you are making new habits and destroying old mental habits.

You asked why those old thoughts keep coming in, because of habit.  Its good to understand how the mind works - it is addictive.  Whatever thought pattern we get into, it keeps on throwing those thoughts back at us.  You have thought negatively for along time, so now you are tryig to break out of it, but those habits keep those thoughts coming back.  It takes about 21 days to break old thought patterns/old habits.  So for 21 days you are going to have to battle with them as hard as you can.  Which means everytime the old thoughts come back, you will find yourself going down that train of thoughts and being tossed into an emotion of sadness/or despair at the end of the line.   So what do you do next time, as soon as you notice your mind has gone down that old train of thoughts, you step back and became aware of those thoughts.  Name them, eg thoughts of X.  Then put it into a bubble, and blow the bubble away.  Then do your prayer "I am fulll of 5 thieves and desires, please forgive me."   Then start your Satnaam Satnaam simran.

Later on you find yourself down the train of negative thoughts again, and you repeat the cycle to get out of it, put them in abubble, and start your simran.

To start with, depending on how deep those habits are, you may try and limit yourself to only 10 minutes a day of negative thinking.   Infact, if you sit down you can work out how much of your day you spend in different types of thoughts.  Now your aim is to spend your day in throughts of singing Gods praises (kirtan) and doing satnaam simran and good deeds.  Good deeds for others is the best way to stop negative thoughts about yourself.  If you want to be happy, make someone else smile, will make you smile.

Its a struggle, its hard, I have been there, some days its harder than others, but we have Guru with us and the struggle is the journey, so is an important part of our bandagi process.  Dassan Dass ji says that Bandagi is nothing but waging war on maya.

So you can do it, will do, Guru ji is with you.

IF you like, you may like to do a meditation course we ran at home , it will help you thru alot of your insecurities and stuff and is an easy way to become more positive.  Then build up to more simran and 1am for some time in the future.  We also leanred yoga and reiki, we go to the gym regularly, running is a great way to free the mind, feel good and do simran afterwards.   We had to learn about good diet, changed our ways and it has taken the last 8 years to do so, but its only because we were not content to stay down, depressed, low energy, slave of maya and bad habits and negative thinking.

So same for you when you truly get sick of feeling how you are feeling, then pray for strength, take courage, make the necessary changes, step by step, day by day, thought by thought, start fighting thru the jungle of the mind.

We are here to hold your hand every step of the way.

Some days you will feel like giving up, somedays you will be worse than before, but keep going, never give up, there is Divine Light at the end of this journey, there is Pure divine Love, there is Puran Brahm Gian - the perfect divine wisdom waiting for you.

fulfiling your self-actualisation needs

COMMENT:
superpowers are an impediment for finding the truth, but so can be learning any skill, an impediment can be the desire for health, or even the desire of enlightenement, and if a job is boring it can seem like that because you are not fufiling your soul porpouse, the reason you are here, your job is not fufiling your self-actualisation needs.

REPLY:
SatNaam,

yes you are right, any desire can be an impediment, that is why it is so important to keep saying "thy will be done, not mine", to realise the God is creator and doer of everything and we are running under his control.  To accept that we are where we are as per what we have sown previously.  We asked our guru about self-actualisation needs, he said that self-actualistion was the peak of ego.   Self-realisation is in the opposite direction.  When we are stuck in a boring job, we have to first bring the mind into peace and accept we are here because as per our karma this is what we have sown and hence are reaping.  To then humbly pray to accept where we are, to still do a good job as a servant of God, that this job is in the service of God.  As Sai Baba said, "dont do what you like like what you do."  And as ou own guru says as well, that trust in God, be a servant wherever He places you, and when te time comes He will move you on.    Its all about trusting in God doing the right thing for us, thats the only way out of desires and frustrations and to realise the true purpose of the soul - to self-realise and to become an instrument for God's Will in the world.

Thanks

In books about enlightenment, the superpowers are always thought of as being just another skill like dancing, painting, etc. The ability dies when we die. So I thought that practice would make superpowers better since they're a skill and not enlightenment. I wanted to be in an occupation that I was interested in. My current job is boring beyong words.

SatNaam Jerica,

the key for you is not trying to develop psychic abilities (=YOUR WANT=DESIRE), the key is accept where you are in life at the moment (=GODS WANT=GODS WILL).

When you learn the lesson about yourself from your current job, you will progress spiritually.

Which part of you is getting bored?  The ego.

When you have desires for supernatural powers or any worldy wants, where do they lead you?  Into Maya.

What stops you realising God/Soul within yourself?  The ego, chasing desires, keeping you trapped in Maya.

How do you get out of ego and desires?  Become nothing.

What does that mean practically?  Accept your job is where you are supposed to be right now, so become a slave of God, see your job as
service to God/your higher self.  An excercise in ridding yourself of ego.   Everytime the thoughts come from your ego, "this job is boring beyond words"
keep praying, "Thy will be done, NOT MINE."

When your ego no longer bothers you, you will be at peace, then al lthese powers will come, but they are also a distraction from realising the Truth - the Creator of these powers.  Ask your ego , "why are you going after supernatural powers, when you could be going after the Creator of them?"  Why settle for second best?

The real job is to remember God's Name - Sat Naam , Sat Naam, Sat Naam - the Truth, the Truth, the Truth.
And all day long be nothing, a servant, an attitude of giving, giving, giving to one and all - wether at home, work or out and about - just doing truthful deeds.
And most all all staying desire-free, staying at the feet of the Creator - Sat Naam Karta Purakh.

And what will happen with your job?  Watch and wait, when you trsut in God, unbelievable and amazing things happen - but you have to patient, because everything happens
according to HIS WILL, at the perfect time for us.  so pray to be an instrument for His will in this world, rather than getting frsutrated that your will is not coming to fruition.

We went through similar things, God-Guru Bless You with the Truth.
