once you understand that all of our interactions are due to our KARMA, then you understand that we have past connections with all souls we meet in this life including our family, friends and pets.   Gurbani says our souls are tumbling together through reincarnation and we are reborn to repay our dues to each other.  In one life we may be father and son, in another mother and daughter, in another owner and pet.    Just depends on our deeds, so gurbani says do good deeds, stop bad deeds and then receive the grace - Eternal Blessings of Naam  from the Sant and finish the journey of your soul.  The opposite is true as well, sow bad deeds, come back as an animal and go further away from God.
