Dandauth Bandhna Ji
following some of the sangat being taken aback by the Truth Namjeevan shared last week, we had a chat with Puneet as he was very disturbed by it. And hopefully there is alot to be learned by everyone on the forum by how his mind reacted under the influence of Maya. Baba Ji said that three times the sangat built up around him , but everytime the tests came a large section of the sangat fell away. Baba Ji said that people wanted the naam, wanted their desires to be fulfilled but didnt want to give Daswandh or anything in return. So rather than admit their own selfishness, they became slanderers of Baba ji. Its a test everyone has to go through. The following conversation highlights it. So be aware of when MAYA is talking to you and chage it to GURU talk through humble ardas. Always thank the one who tells us the truth, especially when our ego doesn't like it. That is why Gurbani says the Guru is brave - "sir oopar tanda gur soora", because he tells us the truth fearlessly.
Thanks to Puneet who is honest enough to share this with us and to keep his name on it. It acts as his confession. God-Guru bless him.

Puneet: hey pajji, I know I am not the only one who feels like this.
Harjit: its only your pride thats getting offended, that is the enemy. No one else is the enemy. Anyone who shows you your weaknesses is your friend. In maya, we think our friends are the ones who flatter us, make us feel good, tell us how wonderful we are. In bhagti our friends are the ones who tell us how much desires we have, how much pride we have, show us how much anger we have. But in maya we want to defend ourself - defend what - "that i am someone , i deserver repect, etc etc" its all ego.
Puneet: very true
Harjit: thats the thing that is the hardest to give up. That is why this is a tough path. All the things we love in maya, that give us enjoyment and so on, we want to hold on to, but at the same time we want spiritual peace of mind and want to be in gods good books. Doesnt work like that. Maya is a sweet poison, until we let go of it , Naam cant reside in us. Thats why its tough.
Puneet: you are right pajji.
Harjit: Thats why we are supposed to surrender to our Guru, and the quicker we give up the sweet posion the more Naam saturates us. But then it becomes a game of faith and belief and trust.
Harjit: You are bringing maya thinking into the sangat, "she said this" or "she has favourites" or "she doesn't like me" etc etc. Talking about other people, their motives, what you think of them, what they said, what they did and so on is how people talk in the world and thats what you are used to - judging, criticising and so on. Get out of it all. On this path, dont talk about anyone else, "everyone else is good, no one is bad," says Baba Nanak. Then we avoid, gossiping, flattery, criticising, which can lead to slander, bad feelings, bad thoughts, frustrations, revenge, jealousy and all the other ills that effect the mind.
Puneet: She is not bad pajji and I am sorry if it sounds like ego talking, but i am trying to figure her out.
Harjit: why are you trying to figure her out? That's what we are trying to say, get out of trying to figure people out. Just figure yourself out. Your account is with God, her account is with God, so let God figure out others!
Puneet: I hope He does.
Puneet: But I am not a fan of hypocrisy...therefore one rule for one and one for another cannot be implied.
Harjit: Yes, so dont be a hypocrite yourself.
Harjit: Dassan Dass ji taught us in our ardas to always say to God, "I am the BIGGEST pakhandi (hypocrite), the bIGGEST traitor (loon harami), the most lustful, most egotistical, most greedy, most attached and most full of desires. I fully accept all of my misdeeds, please forgive me SatGuru Ji." Then keep confessing to God every 5 minutes during the day if you have to. Keep confessing to God what you really are inside. That's all Dassan Dass ji has asked us all to do.
Puneet: working on yourself is the key
Harjit: Yes. Why are we all hypocrites and traitors? Because God has given us everything, yet we say things our MINE. God gives us life, yet we say "I AM SOMEONE! I DID IT AND I AM DOING IT – JUST ME , MYSELF AND I" and deny God - our lifeforce. When God takes away our life, then we drop to the ground says Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, then were is our "I AM SOMEONE?"
Puneet: I have been talking to another person in the sangat and we might start our own little sangat in MK. I feel having it at Namjeevan's house has given her the sense of power and dictatorship therefore maybe staying away from the place and doing it somewhere else, eg the buddhist temple for example might be good.
Harjit: OK! You do whatever works for you! We are going to the place where we get slaps, that works for us!
Puneet: The only reason i would come to her house is to see you though, is that wrong?
Harjit: Yes. Guru Arjun Dev ji says, the one who gets rid of EVIL from in their own heart, sees the WHOLE WORLD as his friend. So who is the evil one, if you are seeing evil in others?
Puneet: nice quote. What if I send out invites to others to come to our own little sangat if I was to hold one, or is permission required from above?
Harjit: You are free to do whatever you like, there is no competition, people are welcome to get together and have sangat and remember God however and whenever they like. Just dont make your sangat into talking about other people, just focus on doing simran, serving sangat and others.
Puneet: So sangat is not something which requires permission from Baba ji or Dassan Dass ji?
Harjit: They dont control us, they say only God controls everything – HUKAM. All they have ever done is encouraged us, and all we have ever done is to ask for the blessings before we start anything. Otherwise there are plenty of sangats out there, but not all of them become one with God. Baba Ji said the sangat can't produce a SatGuru, but wherever the SatGuru goes, the sangat is formed.
Puneet: yes. Sorry pajji. I am trying. Hopefully, Baba ji can show me the way too, but I didnt like what she said. It was targeted. She would never say it to her favourites. Hence, it being a dictatorship....but I will have a think.
Harjit: Its all a learning curve for you. You have to try whatever is coming to your mind which will take you into heaven, hell and then if you are blessed you will realise the Truth We cant give you shortcuts with our words, your emotions are too strong, your beliefs in your own wisdom are too strong. You have to learn in your own way. Just as I did and am still doing so.
Puneet: Ahh pajji, I love the sangat. I just dont like dictatorship.
Harjit: We have learned to just accept everyone for what they are, and not to expect anything from anyone but God. When a holy person tells us something, it is god inside them telling the sangat what they need to hear, wether they like it or not – and you defintely didn't like it!
Puneet: exactly. Hence, she needs to accept everyone as they are.
Harjit: Our job is to touch the feet of the ones who have Naam inside them, serve them and do simran together, then thank everyone, share what we know and go home. That's it. No thinking about x,y and z afterwards.
Puneet: people wanna come just for peace let them come. I dont wanna give Daswandh.
I cant afford it yet, but in good time I will give to charity. She needs to realise people are not in her shoes. Everyone has own issues both financially and spirtually. I like coming to sangat. You know why? I find some peace. I may not be doing the simran everyday for 2 hours blah blah blah, but I am finding God. I think a good thing for me to do is speak with Baba ji.
Harjit: Now you finally told the truth, "I dont wanna give daswandh," and "I may not be doing the simran everyday for 2 hours blah blah blah."
Puneet: yes. The truth? I dont understand pajji.
Harjit: and in a previous mail you wrote that you want do seva (meaning you are not doing so at the moment)
Puneet: yes i do want to but I am not doing much much seva at moment though.
Harjit: and also you wrote once, that even though Namjeevan said in sangat to give up desires, but you are not going to, as since you started coming to sangat all your desires have been coming true eg getting your dream job etc. Do you notice what you are doing all the time?
Puneet: no? desiring?
Harjit: Firstly let's forget that Namjeevan said what she did about giving Daswandh and giving up desires as that is upsetting you. Lets go back to Dassan Dass Ji or Baba ji, or even back to Gurbani and Baba Nanak or any guru.
Puneet: OK.
Harjit: Regardless of Namjeevan saying it, the basic message of all the divine souls is to do seva. To do simran for 2.5 hrs a day. To give Daswandh to your Guru - the one who gave you naam, and also give to needy as well.
Puneet: My seva at the moment, is being nice, wishing well upon others, trying to better myself and make myself a better person. I shall provide to charity once I start my full time job.
Harjit: listen please, before replying.
Puneet: sorry.
Harjit: So all these things are tried and tested way for a Sikh to follow the Guru's path. But inside each of us is maya and none of really want to do any of these things because its tough so our mind reacts in two ways. Either a) we get defensive and justify why we are not doing these things. Alot of things you say fall into this category. dont worry we have done the same over the years. Or b) the way the true Sikh deals with it and that is to put it back on the Guru. How? By putting your hands together in ardas, "Dear Satguru ji, you have asked this fool to do these things, but this foolish mind is too stuck in maya to do so." Then you continue and talk to God-Guru about all your issues , difficulties and problems in doing these things that the Guru has asked us to.
"Dear Satguru ji, you are the giver of anything, I am too attached to my money even though I know it wont go with me. I spend money on things for myself that I don't need but just want, yet I claim I have no money to give. Guru ji I am fooling myself. Please forgive me, bless me with being able to give."
Then you move on to whatever maya talk your mind comes up with, "Satguru ji, you have asked us to do 2.5 hrs of simran a day, I am too attached to my sleep, I sleep late, I enjoy my night life, I have so many other things which are more enjoyable. I am a stubborn donkey Guru ji, please forgive me and clean me up and give me the gift of doing simran."
Puneet: Giving Daswandh is something also which should not be forced to do, but something you should do with love, so when its time, it will be time. Is that not right either?
Harjit: You didnt get the point.
Puneet: I do, I am in maya and thats why I cannot see that i should let go of all attachment,s including money, night life etc.
Harjit: yes, you are admitting you are in maya (until we become Gurmukh we are all Manmukhs says Dassan Dass ji). That's the first step to confessing. So whats the next step? Choice a (defend your maya actions), or choice b (apologise for them)?
Harjit: you keep going for choice a.
Puneet: will try to be choice b
Harjit: yes, it took us years to realise that.
Harjit: This is what the path is all about, becoming close to Guru ji within us and telling him all of our problems and our weaknesses. That is humbleness and when there is humbleness God's mercy rains down says Baba Nanak.
Puneet: all i can do is try, thats what i have done since i have been on this path. All I can do is keep the faith and keep trying.
Harjit: yes, thats all any of can do.
Puneet: if it is a battle within the mind then i hope the right side wins but thanks again guru ji.
Harjit: Realise when you hear choice a in your head, that is maya talking. so need to learn to discard all of that nonsense and go for choice b - humbleness.
Puneet: eat the humble pie! It may be tasteless but it always tastes better in the end.
Harjit: yes, well done grasshopper! Now hop along!
Puneet: bye bye pajji, have a good evening
NEXT DAY:
Puneet: Satnaam pajji, i hope you are well, just wanted to say that what you said yesterday did hit me as i was even thinking about whilst playing ps3 last night LOL! i shall try my best to overcome these demons and concentrate on myself before judging others. Hope you are well.
Harjit: all's good. That's what will save you, the fact that you listen and apply the new knowledge you get. That's what its all about.
Puneet: indeed.
Dust of your feet
Harjit
