Satnaam Ji - Dandauth Bandhna ji
we were blessed to speak to a Veer ji the other day, he mentioned about feeling constantly depressed.
That he struggles to have any energy, seems to be dragging himself to work and so on.
Even though he knws its good to do simran, he is only able to do it for a short time and then goes back to the old feelings.
Then he misses days between doing simran and feels guilty about missing days. Which makes him feel even worse - more depressed.
We advised Veer ji to first of all realise that the REAL part of him is the soul and not the thoughts of the mind.
So learn to detach from the mind. Without realising we are being tossed on the thought waves and thrown onto the beach of depression.
So first of all because of these patterns we have etched into our brain - think of something, reminds of a hard time in our life, leads to feelings of sorrow, we constantly get dragged down.
So first of all when we notice we have got absorbed into the negative thoughts again, just try and name them. In that we we recognise their presence.
For example the first time I went through this was when i was feelig broken hearted (althought baba ji says heart never breaks - just the minds wishes). And used to feel depressed and lonely and low all the time. And sad songs and sad poems would make me feel even worse. Some of my rfiends at uni who proabaly felt similar just used to spend all day listening to those sad deprssing songs, somehow they like wallowing in that consciousness. I personally wanted to get out of it.
Years later we learned these techniques.
so when these feelings are so strong and overwhelming, we will find that our mind is constantly throwing us into despair.
So when we start going into those despairing thoughts, just name them - these are thoughts about that girl and how she left me - or whatever...
Then just say to your mind, I let these thoughts go past like the clouds in the sky. These thoughts are not me.
Then bring your mind back to Sat Naam Sat Naam Sat Naam - chant it loud and clear , sing it loud, and really focus your mind on listening to each and every sound
- SAAAA TTTT NAAAAA MMMMMMM. Do whatever it takes to get your thoughts off the negative ones onto Sat Naam.
Because we have let the mind run wild for so long , the patterns of thoughts and emotions will be strongly ingrained in us. And Baba ji said the brain is addictive, so it will keep replaying the same old patterns again and again and again. So you will find, like Veer Ji said, that you can do simran for a while, but then return to those doom and gloom kinds of thoughts. And depending how strong and recent those traumatic events are, those patterns are replayed in our mind again and again.
But, we cannot give up. This whole path of Bagti is a wgaing war against maya, and we have the blessings of Dassan Dass Ji Baba Ji Satguru Sat Naam ji.
So just accept the mind has overpowered us, but now we are fighting back, and EVERY TIME we go back into those thoughts is EVERYTIME we NAME them and LET THEM GO and return to SAAAA TTTTTT NAAAAA MMMMMM SAAAA TTTTTT NAAAAA MMMMMM.
It can also help to physically get up, to walk and chant, to say each of the sounds with each step.
Or if you cant walk around, then touch your thumb to each of the four finger tips as you say each sound.
Then what you will find is that whenever you struggle to do simran because your mind is too overwhelmed, you can just tap your fingers or start walking and that will get you into the rhythm again. Talking of rythim, singing is reall really great way to get into a rythim, to get the mind out of old thought patterns and to put your energy into singing really from the heart, sing loud and listen to each word that comes our of your mouth.
I am sure you get the idea now of how to fight these destructive thoought patterns, by making a determined effort NOT TO GIVE UP,
to FIGHT THEM EVERYTIME THEY COME, and to USE PHYSICAL BODY TO HELP YOU REPROGRAM YOUR MIND.
The greates gift is the power of Ardas and confessions. so keep doing ardas to God-guru inside and pray for Him to hold your and pull you out of the well of maya.
Please do use this group to email all your destructive thoughts, because by doing so you are recognisign them, writing emotional things down also helps to structure our thoughts. Thought are chaotic and make us go crazy and round and around. But by writing them down it makes us go through them one at a time, makes us slow down and think about them. With the added advantage by sharing them on this forum, everybody prays for you and those blessings take the load off your shoulders.
Here is an artcile about the power of Chanting - so go for it
==========
Sat Nam Ji:
CHANT, CHANT, CHANT...
Chanting involves Will, which depends on Emotions, which will lead to
Desires and Actions.
Chanting involves breath control, whether conscious of it or not. With
breath control, the mind receives direction...from your own Soul. With
chanting, any Pranic Body imbalance will start to harmonize. With
chanting the prana-apana will revolve at the Navel Center so the true
healing energy may irradiate.
Chant the name of Guru, Shabd Guru, the Master within. Rise up and
chant to the Infinite.
The miracle mantra, Guru-Guru-Wahe-Guru...Guru-Ram-Das-Guru. Chant it!
One minue, two, five, eleven, it does not matter. You will find
yourself chanting it all day long!
I know you have received very wise advise from many in this group.
Follow your Self.
My advise is very simple and I humbly submit it to your consideration.
Simran, remembrance and repetition of the Name, Nam, Naad, Shabd. The
Bhagavad Gita mentions "it is the highest form of spiritual practice".
Says Guru Arjun, AG-517
"Within our hearts we contemplate the Master,
On our tongue is his holy Name,
In our eyes resides his form,
In our ears resounds the divine melody.
We remain completely engrossed in his remembrance,
We become merged in the state of ceaselessly dweling upon him.
Our mind and intellect are completely coloured
With the dye of his constant remembrance.
Such persons alone gain honour and glory in the court of the Lord,
And thus fulfill the great destiny of human life."
