THIS IS IN REPLY TO A GURU PYARE JI WHO ASKED ABOUT HOW WE DEAL WITH GETTING EGO WHILST DONIG SEVA.

 

Guru Nanak Dev ji says that he is a sacrifice to the ones who go for Naam,
that he is a sacrifice to theo nes who go for Naam
that he is a sacrifice to the ones who go for naam,
that for the ones who go for naam HE is always and forever is a sacrifice.
 
"Hau kurbanee jao , hau kurbanee jao, hau kaurbanee jao jo layn jo tera nao
layn jo tera nao hau sadh kurbanay jao"

We just have to remember that we can't give up and got to stay in the game , because by playing this eternally blessedgame of love (GurPrasaadi Khel) we progress, even by making mistakes like doing seva with ego we are still learning and progressing.  See you know the answer to your own quesiton but are just asking for confirmation.  Baba ji always teaches us not to get attached to him - the outer Guru, He told us that His  job is to connect us to our inner Eternal Guru.  So He says always pray first to God-_Guru within to find an answer to any problem or situation that we are in.  And if we are still confused then to ask Baba ji the outer Eternal Guru for advice.  Because for most people they are not in tune with their intuition and have not had GurParsaad - Gods' blessing and hence are not connected at all to their heart, but just live according the logic and own wisdom in the mind.
 
But as you said Seva with ego is wasted.  Gurbani says that Seva is to eradicate ego, so if it causes ego then all the good deeds in the world are worth nothing for spiritual progression.  Baba Ji said that if they were worth something then all the charity workers in the world would be saints by now. So what is the answer?  Dassan Dass Ji has taught us to recognise that God-Guru is doing everything, that Sat Naam Karta Purakh is the creator and only Doer of everything, Guru Nanak Maharaj ji says:
 
Tu karta karnaa ma nahee
je hau karee na hoee
..You are the Creator and Doer
if "I" (ego) do it, then it is of no avail.
 
So before doing seva you can put your hands to gether and pray to God that HE comes and does the seva through this body.  And whilst doing seva keep doing your naam simran and that is keeping your connection with God-Guru, and after fifinshing seva, put your hands to gether and say "Dear Guru ji, thankyou so much for making us of some use in this world, of using this body to serve others."
 
Guru Arjun Dev ji also say "teree seva teree seva teree seva jis too aap karaaiee"
your seva, your seva, your seva which you yourself got done.
 
and then says "mukat bhugat jugat teree seva"
 In Your seva is salvation and is the method of union.
 
 
These verses really help us when we do seva to stay humble and to realise that God is doing everything, He is making us breathe, He is arranging for our next meal , He is pumping our blood and digesting our food, in the same way He is running the whole Universe from the biggest galaxies to the smallest bacteria, He is Sat naam karta Purakh and He is the only Creator and Doer.  But we being in ego think we are doing something, that we are separate from the Universe, that somehow we are running everything under our control.
 
Get up at Amrit Vela - early hours and just look up at the stars and realise how small we are. Look back in history and see that 100 years ago someone else stood in the same spot we are no standing and their houses and their families and their stories are all buried under our feet.  Just as in 100 years time someone else will be standing here and they will not even remember our name or our story either.
 
All we can do is pray to God-Guru Ji and surrender everything, "SatGuru ji, mind body and soul are all Yours, nothing is mine, nothing ever was and nothing ever will be.  Make me into Your servant, into the servant of the whole universe, make me into the servant of even the worm in shit that you have created, may "I" (ego) die so that the glory of Your Naam shines from this heart forever.  Use this mind , body and wealth Guru ji to heal the world, to cool the burning world, to help others to be free to.  Guru ji bless us with this seva, take our head, take our wealth, take away the fear of losing our family, our reputation and our money, take everyything and merge us into You."
 
Have so much trust that your Satguru ji will take care of EVERYTHING for you and have so much love and for the lotus feet of your Sant Satguru Ji, that when you sit for naam simran you merge into them completely, that you forget your name, that you are so many years old, that you are someones daughter or you are this or you are that and all you know is that you are part and parcel of the LOVE that is Sat Naam Karta Purakh that holds the creation and runs the creation.
 
May God Guru bless you always and forever, surrender everything for the love of the Lord , for the love of Naam , for the love of the feet of the Sant Satguru. Let God serve everyone and everything day and night at home and at the gurdwara through you.

 

A Guru Pyare Ji said it beautifully, that actually God himself comes and does the Seva thru this body and is so humble that HE lets us take the credit.  but if we take the credit it boosts our ego, so we are to stay humble and give back all thanks to God who came and did the Seva.  Pass all praise back to God-Guru andif someone slanders the servant of God-Guru, then God doesn't tolerate that either.  But wither waay we dont keep the praises we get for seva in us, nor do we keep the hurt if we get slandered ni us  Just become empty of EGO and nothing sticks to us then, and pass everything up to God-Guru.
