Deeds not words.

1.
chungaaeaa bureeaaiaa vachay dharam hadoor
Karmee apo apanee ke neray kay dhoor.
Jini naam dhiaayaa gae maskat ghaal.
nanak te mukh ujalay ketee shutee naal.

Our good acts and bad acts will be presented in the presence of the divine judge,
Our deeds are our own (we are responsible for them) and result us in going nearer or further from God,
Those who surrendered to satnaam toiled (did deeds) in the right direction.
There faces shine bright and many go along with them.

punnee papee akhaan naahi
kar kar lekhay aavay jaai

what we do again and again goes with us.

In gurbani we are taught that nothing on the outside (rituals, pilgrimages, religious dress etc) is going to get us to God.  Even in Gurbani Guru's have said that doing ritual readings, prayers, sitting in trances, and even repeating a word (mantra) is not going to get us to God as God is beyond all of that.

Na jantr, na tantr na mantr
..God is beyond yantras (sacred meditation diagram to focus on) , tantra (religious texts) and mantras (repeated sound/word) .
 

Yet, we have been given SatNaam as the highest mantra

Namaskarr gurdev ko jis satnaam mantra sunaayaa
I bow to the divine guru who gave me the Satnaam mantra.

...Bhai Gurdas ji.




So seems a bit contradictory?


The point to realise is that first and foremost God is a Being ..Sat PUrakh - Truth Being, just like we love another human being, we can also love Sat Purakh - the Truth Being and that is the highest thing ....jin prem keeo tin hee prabh paaio ...only those who loved god realised Him (The Truth)...Guru Gobind Singh ji.

But without Guru's grace, just reciting a mantra, or focusing on a yantra or reading tantra (texts)  is just going to keep us at the lvel of the mind, only with Gurparsaad can we transcend the mind into the heart.

So that is the meaning behind:

Na jantr, na tantr na mantr
..God is beyond yantras (sacred meditation diagram to focus on) , tantra (religious texts) and mantras (repeated sound/word) .
 

God is beyond our mind and beyond techniques (yantra, tantra and mantra).



But with Gurparsaad attached to God's name, SatNaam, we can conquor the mind and go beyond.


But even then Baba ji said in a recording from Nov 2012 , that even SatNaam is a control, (controls our mind and keeps us at feet of God to overcome ego),  but Baba ji said I dont want to stay under control and at the feet of God, I want to live in God's heart - Truth, Love, COmpassion, I want to serve, serve serve God with every breath and even if my body rots, to serve even more.  So that is extreme love giving birth to extreme selfless service.


So all of us doing SAtnaam simran keep the awareness we are doing it with love and affection for our husband SATNAAM, the SAT PURAKH - truth being, and not to just repeat SATNAAM SATNAAM mechanically, likea magic techniue which is going to give us powers, expereinces and whatever else we are dreaming of in terms of spiritual success (Ego wants success and status and a pat on the back!).


A holy man was in service of his Guru, he was old but every morning he would line up to get some milk from the farm.  It wasa long line, he just turned his beads and repeated gods name on each one while he waited,  then he saw a young man jump the line go to the front, get a smile from the farmers daughter who served him milk.  When the old holy man got to the front, he asked her "daughter, i am old, and find it hard to stand in the heat for so long, yet you didnt let me jump the line, but did let that young man, why?"  And she replied, "Baba, he is my lover and for him there are no rules."

The words struck the old man, "God, all this time I've been reciting your name, year after year wondering why i'm still so far from you, but I never fell in love with you, I never said your name with all my heart to be with you."  He threw down his beads and thanked the girl and kissed her feet,

Dont let Satnaam simran become just a technique, always do swatnaam with affection in your heart says Baba ji.  Love Satnaam as a Being, not just as word/mantra to recite.
