We are so lucky that we have thousands of Shabads in Guru Granth Sahib Ji that we can learn to sing and play music with.
As well as helping us spiritually, learning to sing and playing music develops huge areas of the brain. So it helps us in all areas of our life.
So it is good to learn ourself and especially to encourage our children to sing Gurbani. It helps them to connect to the Shabad, helps to develop
their brain and hence helps them in their education in all subjects.
But regardless of the research, learning to sing Gurbani is such a beautiful and easy way to feel the love and innocence the Guru Sahibs And Bhagats had for God. When you sing a shabad of Guru Arjun Dev ji it is like Guru Arjun Dev ji is melting our heart, like He is sitting in our heart himself and singing.
There is a story of a Sant who met a prostitute Ganika and she completely changed her ways. He blessed her with the GurParsaad and gave her one simple thing to do and that was to teach her parrot to say God's Name. He must of known it would have been too much to ask her to sit and meditate for hours, so he gave her that simple task - to teach her parrot to say God's Name. Over months and years she did so and in doing so she also was saved, God's Name went into her heart, mind and soul.
Bhagt Namdev Ji wrote:
Sooaa paRaavat, Ganika tari ||
Sooa means parrot, paRaavat means by teaching, Ganika means that lady we are talking about above. By teaching the parrot, the Ganika swam across this ocean of life and death.
We feel like learning the vaja and singing has the same effect on us. If we are struggling to do Naam simran and mediate, then start by just trying to sing God's Name on the Vaja (harmonium) - just make up a simple 3 key tune and go from there. Do it every day. Start with saying your humble prayer - gareebee ardas and just stick at it every day and let Satguru ji teach your from within.
Baba ji said that the human voicebox and tongue was the greatest instrument ever created. Why? Because that is the one instrument directly created by God Himself. So He has given us this gift, so let us use it to sing His praises.
There is a story of another Bhagat, he so loved God and singing His praises that he everyday there would be a new shabad written by God himself for him to sng. He was overjoyed and sang with happiness in his heart. So we are so , so , so fortunate that we have Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji full of Shabads from God Himself, so let us bring even one int our heart. Read it, sing it, play music with it, unerstand it, earn it by acting upon the divine words of Truth and ultimately become Gurbani. So that there is no difference between what we do and what Gurbani says. That one is Gurmukh and has become the walking, talking , breathing word of God.

So start singing Gurbani with joy in your heart, learn an instrument like vaja if you can and ultately experience the real divine kirtan. And if you can, encourage your children to learn as well, it will help develop their brain ans well as their spirit.
